Mosquitoes are more than just a mere nuisance here in Charleston. These pests carry dangerous diseases, which could have an effect on you and your family. Here are some of the most common mosquito-borne diseases — and how you can get rid of mosquitoes on your property.
1. Chikungunya
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. This condition can cause symptoms such as joint pain, fever, and headache.
Most people with chikungunya symptoms in the U.S. have traveled from affected areas. In 2014, however, two people in Florida who had not recently traveled showed symptoms of the virus.
2. Zika Virus
Mosquitoes transmit the Zika virus — a condition which causes symptoms such as fever and rash in humans. The Zika virus originated in Africa.
There were 5,728 symptomatic Zika disease cases reported in the U.S. in the period from January 1, 2015, to October 3, 2018. The majority of people with Zika virus symptoms have traveled from an affected area outside of the U.S. However, experts believe 231 people acquired Zika virus symptoms via local mosquito-borne transmission.
3. Malaria
Malaria is a virus that causes fever, chills, and other flu-like symptoms. If not treated, this condition can be life-threatening. Doctors diagnose around 1,700 cases of malaria in the U.S. every year.
“[Malaria] is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito,” says Healthline. “Infected mosquitoes carry the Plasmodium parasite. When this mosquito bites you, the parasite is released into your bloodstream.”
